Queen Elizabeth’s Best Practices

At almost 95 years old, Queen Elizabeth II works a full week and carries out more public engagements than many of the younger royals.[1] How does she maintain her energy in her old age and manage to accomplish so much? Being royalty doesn’t make you super-human, but maybe her lifestyle holds some answers. Here are 3 of Queen Elizabeth’s best practices.

A Routine

The Queen has a set morning ritual of waking up at 7:30 am to a pot of Earl Grey tea and taking a bath. After getting ready, she has breakfast, usually yogurt, fruit, and cereal, and reads the morning paper. This is a very ordinary sounding routine for royalty, but it’s kept the Queen going for decades. Whether you’re a fan of Earl Grey or not, you can create your own retirement routine that gets you up and ready for the day. Even if you’re not as busy as the Queen, a schedule can give you a sense of purpose and momentum.

 Continuing to Work

Unlike a regular job, you can’t retire from being royalty. However, the Queen chooses to work as many hours as she does and continue doing public engagements. Every day she reviews important documents like Parliamentary legislation, meets with others – like bishops, foreign ambassadors, and the prime minister – and travels to give speeches. You don’t have to be the Queen to stay active in retirement. An active lifestyle is one way to create your own Blue Zone in 2021, and all it takes is a commitment to doing new things, staying socially engaged, and keeping your brain sharp.

Taking Time to Relax

As busy as the Queen is, she takes time for afternoon tea from 5 pm to 6 pm. During this time, work is put away, and she enjoys tea with some snacks. We always need time to rest and recharge, especially when we’re busy. Separating out work and leisure time is important in retirement when you are making your own schedule.

Whether you’re retired to looking forward to retiring, we can help you create a comprehensive financial plan. You don’t have to be as rich as the Queen of England to need a retirement income plan, tax minimization strategy, or estate plan.
